Andy's style is to 'tell it like it is' and you can read his interesting critique by clicking here: http://www.footballgroundsinfocus.com/TT78196.htm. Wednesday 13 February - Girona v Orihuela (Spanish Segunda B Group 3): Gary Spooner - writes: 'Surprise 3-0 win for Orihuela as Girona were 12 points clear at the top before (and after) game was played. Orihuela could (and should) have won about 12-0! Perhaps the Girona players were all at a party the night before or perhaps they didn't like the rain - it absolutely lashed it down all afternoon.

As you can see the ground is half decent with an all seated main stand plus two ends with seats at the front and lots of lovely terracing behind.  The fourth side contained a large mural but people were able to stand in front of this.  Admission to the stand (a must given the weather) was 25 euros.  The brave souls on the terraces paid 10 euros.  Attendance was listed at 900 in Marca and 700 in As - I split the difference and estimated 800 - lower than I thought for a team cruising away with the title but probably very fair given the weather and the fact that the ground was about a 3 mile walk from town with no buses running on a Sunday.  The wife was most displeased that I decided we should walk and not get a taxi!  There was an 8 page fold out poster programme which was free on admission and also a Souvenir stall which sold a variety of items but unfortunately no badges.  Food and drink also on sale - loved the bar at the back of terrace as pictured.

I would give the match a 4 star rating as Orihuela were awesome - they looked like Arsenal playing cracking attacking football and should have scored a lot more goals.  A very entertaining afternoon despite the weather. Regards. Gary'

Following Paul's visit to the club on 26 January v West Wratting, I received a letter from Bruce who writes: 'With regard to the programme, I can tell you that we print about 60 for each home game. At the moment the programme is given away free with the admittance charge of £1...the income from advertising helps to pay for production. As costs rise ...I may start charging for it...next season. I can tell you that we used to send a programme away for review (to the WPC run by Mr. Ian Runham) and the highest placing was 105th place nationally out of some 1000+ programmes'.

The programme is excellent and is packed with loads of interesting news, reviews and stats - all professionally produced for just £1. Wednesday 6 February - Morecambe FC Ground News: Andy Gallon reports: '...thought travellers might be interested in this statement from Morecambe chairman Peter McGuigan about the club's proposed move from Christie Park to the Westgate area of the town':

The cabinet of Lancaster City Council (has) voted in principle in favour of selling the Westgate land to Morecambe FC. This decision is fundamental in our development programme and is subject to certain conditions. These are that the land is sold at full market value, that the trustees of Morecambe FC should be included in the decisions on the future use of our current ground (Christie Park) and that city councillors be involved in decisions on the relocation of the Westgate Wanderers youth teams who currently use the site. There is a lot of work to be done on their new site and an application for planning consent is being considered by Lancaster City Council.

I expect an application for planning consent for the new stadium to be submitted to Lancaster City Council on February 8, 2008. Negotiations for the sale of Christie Park are ongoing and it is imperative we extract as much value as possible to fund the total development. There is speculation that the new stadium will be similar in design to that of Shrewsbury's. Whilst there is a great deal to admire at Shrewsbury, one must remember it is a 10,000 all-seater stadium which cost around £13m. Our new stadium will have an initial capacity of around 6,500, of which 2,000 will be seated. Our costs will be significantly below £13m. This development is a massive project for Morecambe FC and, when completed, should ensure the financial stability of the club for years to come. I would like to reassure everyone there is an enormous amount of work being done in the background and I am confident the new stadium will be completed on time by July 2009.
