Wednesday 28th May - TT No.100: Keith Aslan - Don't miss Keith's ace report from an end of season cup final football hop to watch Hunsworth (v Wakefield) in the West Riding League Division 1 Cup Final played at Campion FC on 24/05/14 (waiting to be uploaded to the TT Index for May 2014)...

TT No.100: Keith Aslan - Sat May 24th 2014; Hunsworth v Wakefield; West Riding League Division 1 Cup Final; Venue: Campion FC; Kick-Off: 13.59; Result: 2-4; Admission & Programme: £1; Attendance: 68 (39 Hunsworth, 21 Wakefield & 8 neutral).

With the quarter finals still to take place on the May Day bank holiday, the traditional date for the finals, the league managed to condense virtually it's entire cup competition into three weeks to now make May 24th "Super Saturday" with the Premier and Division 1 Cup Finals forming a double header. With Campion winning their semi final four days before hand another problem arose when they were unable to play on the Saturday due to their manager getting married. Their match was bought forward to the Friday leaving just the one game.

Campion play in Heaton, a suburb of  Bradford. There are four buses an hour from the interchange to within 5 minutes of the ground, but I chose to walk it from Frizinghall station which was about 25 minutes away. This has the advantage of walking through the glorious Lister park. Boating Lake, Botanical Gardens, Cafe (closed) and an Art Gallery, a wonderful place to stroll on a sunny day, but not in the pouring rain like today. Highlight for me was a fossilized tree stump that was 300 million years old. How do they know? Even more importantly, there was a Greggs outside the park entrance.

Make no mistake, this game would have been postponed at any other time of year and the puddle-filled pitch would have certainly been deemed unplayable if there had been another date to rearrange the fixture. Here's the thing, it produced a perfectly good game of football and only served to illustrate that a lot of matches are called off needlessly. It rained throughout, and it had been raining solidly for the past 16 hours. Not the namby-pamby stuff we get down south, this was proper rain, straight off the Pennines. Thankfully, Campion has a small covered stand, which once was a big covered stand but the roof has fallen off most of it. Fully railed it is adjacent to a cricket pitch but the two sports don't impinge on each other.

This was a feisty match, Wakefield 2-1 up at half time, they sealed the game with a 25 yard own goal and a goalkeeping error with Hunsworth's second coming in injury time. With the game over as a contest, I don't know how Hunsworth managed to accrue three bookings for dissent in the last five minutes. Footballers eh?

As this was a cup final we had that most pointless of beings, the 4th official. While the referee and linesmen all came from Bradford, the fourth man came from Wakefield, I don't know what he got paid (25p. a mile travelling expenses for starters) but he certainly wasn't value for money. He spent two minutes sorting out three substitutions and the other 96 minutes watching the football. I wish I could get a job like that. The only difference between him and the rest of the spectators was at least he had to stand out in the rain.

The trains between London and Bradford were spot on in both directions. The North East railway is the only line currently not in private hands. I wonder if there is a connection?

WebEd writes: Still buzzing a week after attending the game. A truly magical day out that will long live in the football memory and definitely well worth the mega four and a half hour wait to book those golden tickets over the phone! With barely ten minute's gone on the stopwatch and leading 2-0 it was surreal to sit alongside grown men dressed in black and amber crying in disbelief! Despite the defeat it rounded off what was a great season for everyone at the club. I just hope our European football adventure doesn't detract from maintaining Premier League football next campaign...

Thursday 22nd May - TT No.99: Keith Aslan - Read Keith's cracking report from an end of season hop to watch Fairfield (v Panteg) in the Gwent County League Division 1 fixture played on 17/05/14 (waiting to be uploaded to the TT Index for May 2014)...

TT No.99: Keith Aslan - Sat May 17th 2014 - Fairfield v Panteg; Gwent County Div 1; Kick-Off: 13.02; Result: 0-5; Admission & Programme: Free; Attendance: 28 (20 home, 6 away & 2 neutral)...Keith writes

'It's cup final day and good to see after last years ludicrous kick off time of 5.15pm it's reverted to the traditional 5 o' clock start. And to think some people say the FA Cup with Budweiser has lost it's magic! My choice of match was somewhat more prosaic and it was a case of: "Go west young man" (young?) with all my groundhopping wants being a bus ride away from Newport'.

'From the four options available on route X24 I chose Fairfield. This was definitely the best ground and probably the worst match. I worked out the X24 covers nine Welsh and Gwent County League clubs, so here is a quick guide to this most useful of routes. It goes from Newport to Blaenavon and is easy to find in the bus station as it goes from the same number bay as the bus, 24. You won't need a timetable, they are every 10 minutes. They run non stop to Cwmbran and do the journey in a faster time than the train, and if you are one of the few people who pay for bus journeys, buy a day Explorer ticket which covers the whole of South Wales for an amazing £7.50p, the single fare to Fairfields ground is even more amazing at £6.50p'.

'Fairfield play in the unpronounceable village of Garndiffaith, about 5 miles north of Pontypool, with the bus stop being 50 yards from the entrance. As you walk back you can see the ground far below the road in it's magnificent setting. It is aptly called "the ravine" with wooded cliffs on three sides. There is a car park and the dressing rooms as you enter the ground, with a long steep row of steps leading down through the trees to the pitch. The ground itself is fully railed with the surrounding cliffs making a terrific backdrop to the action'.

'This was an end of season match both chronologically and aesthetically and after the first 15 minutes or so it was just a matter of how many Panteg would score. All credit to them midway through the second half for changing round the goalkeeper with the centre forward, a switch made solely for entertainment purposes. The keeper, (and there's no tactful way of putting this), was a massive porker, and with the mobility of Steven Hawking, playing him upfront was always going to be for comedic effect. He was stunningly useless but gave everybody a good laugh, brightened up a pretty dire game, and he was obviously enjoying himself. All in all a thoroughly pleasant day out even if the football was pretty duff'...(contributed on 19/05/14).

Gary adds (via E-Mail sent on 18/05): 'Yesterday saw me attend the title decider in the 2nd Division of the
Northants Combination with second placed Daventry playing leaders Weedon in the final game of the season. A win was required by Daventry to win the title whilst a draw was enough for Weedon. As you can imagine this made for
a competitive game which saw Weedon win 2-0 and it was they who stepped up afterwards to claim the impressive trophy and the winners medals'.

Wednesday 14th May - Latest Images: Bob Davies - A Saturday Double for Bob brings us some mouth-watering matchday photos from his chosen games at Welwyn St Mary's Reds (v Three Churches) in the  Herts and Border Churches League followed by Henlow (v Brickhill Tigers) in the Bedfordshire County Football League Division One (at Arlesey recreation ground) both played on 10/05/14...now uploaded to the FGIF album gallery...

Bob adds (via E-Mail): 'For my second game I chose the final Beds County League game of the season. This was a division one fixture between Henlow and Brickhill Tigers. Because of this summer(?) sport of cricket taking priority the game was played at Arlesey recreation ground just off Arlesey High street. There is currently no Saturday football being played there and it was also a new venue for me. The home side were 0-1 behind at the break and fell further behind early in the second half. A good comeback from the Henlow saw them get back to level terms and the game end with the points shared in a 2-2 draw'.

Wednesday 14th May - Latest Images: Gary Spooner - Dieser bilder sind zehr schon! Check out Gary's superb selection of matchday pictures  taken at Stuttgart Kickers (v Red Bull Leipzig) in the Bundesliga 3 played on 10/05/14..now added to the FGIF album gallery...

Gary reports (via E-Mail): 'Last game for Kickers at the Gazi before the bulldozers move in to knock down the main stand and reconstruct.  Final day opponents were promotion winners Leipzig who were still in with a chance of the title at kick off which guaranteed a large and boisterous away support.  Leipzig did their bit by winning comfortably but had to settle for runners up spot as Heidenheim also won.  Cracking atmosphere with both sets of fans in the party spirit.  Kickers had their end of season party after the game for the fans with the players appearing, a live band and free beer provided by the sponsors!'.

Rob writes (via E-Mail): 'My final Sunday morning game this season and saw a title decider in division 1 of the Leicester Sunday League: FC Wyvern Arms 2-0 Athletic Oadby. The visitors went into this game needing a point to be crowned divisional champions, but it was the hosts who came out on top to win the title by two points. Anyway please find attached 45 photos from the game which was played in a combination of glorious sunshine and (very) heavy showers!!!'.

'Passed by the ground of St John's United (Canada Life Manx Premier League) whilst spending a week on the Isle of Man, and called in to take a couple of shots. Season over, the goals had been removed, restricting photo opportunities!'.

WebEd writes: 'Second placed Orwell needed just one point to gain promotion along with champions Barrington who visited the village recreation ground today for a top of the table Division 1A fixture. After being pegged back to 1-1 just before half-time the hosts re-took the lead in the second half to gain the much needed points with a well deserved 3-1 victory. This went down well with the majority of the seventy or so spectators in attendance'.

'Much credit goes to player manager Chris Haynes who has guided the club to its fifth consecutive promotion up through the Cambs County League ranks to take its place in the Senior Division for 2014-15. After 25 years as a player and a coach Chris now retires handing over the reigns to the new manager who comes in from nearby Royston Town FC in the summer'.

'The club plays at the local village recreation ground in Town Green Road found behind the primary school a few minutes drive from the main High Street after taking the A603 from the M11. It's a picturesque location being fully enclosed by trees and hedges sharing its facilities with the village tennis club. There's a smart pavilion located in the corner of the field. Today committee members who had set up a barbeque were kept very busy providing refreshments on what was a lovely warm sunny day. A visit here for all lovers of Cambs County League football comes highly recommended'.
