Monday 27 September - Amazing Hopping Event: Keith Aslan - writes: 'Went to Rayners Lane FC yesterday and I expect you've read about the catastrophes that befell the match. If not, to summarise...opponents Launton Sports pulled out on Wednesday having disbanded; .L. then arranged to play Northwood at short notice for a "Groundhop Cup" and they even got a nice little engraved cup to present to the winners. 16 hours before the game, Northwood pulled out, having just sacked their manager. Amazingly at that short notice R.L. arranged for Broadfields to play. All credit to them for turning up, and to R.L. for not giving a game up in the face of extreeme adversity. Good game as well, 2-2 with Broadfields wining the prestigous trophy on penalties. I was well chuffed, expecting to see Launton, getting a programme for a match against Northwood, and finding the actual opposition was Broadfields. Now thats what I call a collectors item!!'

Monday 27 September - Former Norwich City FC ground photos: Andy Gallon - writes: 'On the second Tuesday of our East Anglia holiday, we spent the day in Norwich. We completed a five-mile solo walking tour of this interesting city and, at one point, arrived at an old medieval water gate adjacent to the Wensum, not far from the Anglican cathedral. A plaque revealed the now defunct ferry there was often used by fans attending Norwich City's ground at The Nest on nearby Rosary Road.

Now, I've always wanted to visit the site of this unique one-time Football League ground - and was thrilled to discover it a short walk away on the other side of the river. As you will see from the attached images, new houses are being built on the site, replacing small industrial units. City played at The Nest between 1908 and 1935, attracting a record crowd of 25,037 in February 1935 for a cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday. And yet the place was wholly unsuitable for staging big games. It was a disused chalk pit known as Ruymps Hole when the Canaries moved in. The west end of the ground was dominated by a sheer chalk cliff, on which spectators would perch in precarious fashion. The houses, still in existence, at the east (Rosary Road) end were so close to the pitch, the ball went into their gardens many times. The joke was City's keeper would eventually marry one of the girls who lived in the houses, so often did he have to retrieve the ball. Shortly before the club moved to Carrow Road, the old chalk workings gave way and a 30ft chasm opened in a corner of the pitch. An amazing tale - and a truly remarkable home for professional football. As you'll see from the pictures, the chalk cliff face is still there and City have marked the site with a plaque on the wall of a neighbouring house'.

WebEd - Andy's photos from the site of The Nest have now been uploaded to the new FGIF album gallery...

Gary writes: 'A local trip today after a proposed visit to Winsford in the Vase was postponed due to the fact that I was hit by a virus.  A short journey and a 1.30pm kick off meant that I was back home in time for Final Score.  Probably the lowest level game that I have ever attended (I even played at a higher level!) as both teams are in Division Three (actually the fourth level division) of the North Leicestershire League.  Definitely not complaining though as I saw six goals and an entertaining game despite the supposed lack of skill.  Certainly a lot more entertaining and a lot more commitment on show than one game I've seen so far this season which ended 0-0!'

Friday 10 September - Programme Review: Ritchie Woods - Hot Off the Press!! Don't miss the very latest programme cover scan and details from Long Eaton United (Northern Counties East League Premier Div) v Maltby Main played on 21/08/10 now added to the PR page for September 2010...it's superb issue!!

WebEd - When Ritchie sent his club programme to FGIF a couple of weeks ago I could not believe what a terrific publication it is! All beautifully laid out, the 44 pages are jam packed with loads of interesting articles, news, reports, stats and info to keep the discerning fan busy for hours. What's more, nearly every page contains full colour portrait/action photos from previous games; club player and staff -profiles and amusing one-line captions showing the Fanzone etc. This certainly must be a strong contender for the NCEL 'Programme of the Year'. I can thoroughly recommend this matchday magazine to all FGIF visitors and programme collectors. You will love it!

In a covering letter Ritchie adds: '...Although not a glossy production, a fair level of effort goes into the programme to ensure it includes all involved with the club, including the supporters. The 40-page edition. excluding cover, is a minimum. It is an attempt to move away from the normal fare provided at this level and always includes a significant level of photographs, factual detail and a little irreverent humour'.

Bod adds: 'A family engagement in the evening saw me stay local on Saturday so a visit to the 'Eagles in their home debut in the Herts Senior County League fitted in nicely. The promoted sides are all doing well currently occupying three of the top four placings. None more so than Eagles who are sitting at the top of the division. A narrow 2-1 victory today against the Watford based side. The basis for this victory was set before half time with Eagles taking a 2-0 lead through Mcgennity and former Langford player Robert Groves. Although Croxley pulled one back in the second their possession did not translate into clear cut chances to share the spoils. The programme is available from the refreshment room and has doubled in size this season from four to eight pages. Following these games Bob writes: 'Well the improved weather saw me take in some Herts Senior County League action in midweek. Please find attached some photo from Goffs Oak home debut in HSCL Division One on Tuesday evening. The home side gave the large amount of ground hoppers a big welcome including the production of a match day programme (£2) and free refreshments at half time! The match result in a resounding 6-1 victory for the home side. Unfortunately for the visitors as this was to prove to be their final match of the season, please see below** with a statement from the Herts Senior County League website...

On Wednesday evening I attended the Letchworth derby between Baldock Town Letchworth and Letchworth Garden City Eagles. This was an excellent game that resulted in a 3-1 win for the visiting Eagles. No photos on this one I'm afraid but the programme will be in my review...(coming soon)...

Thursday and a short hop down the A1 to the village of Lemsford now the of HSCL Division One newcomers, Eight Bells Old Hatfield F.C. A 1-0 win for the visitors maintained there 100% start to League season and they currently occupy second place in the League. No programmes were in evidence at this game.

**STATEMENT FROM ALLENBURYS SPORTS FC (from HSCL website)

'Allenbury's have given notice they have withdrawn from the league. Their results to date will be expunged and Senior Division I will continue with 16 teams in competition.

Allenburys FC were widely recognised in Hertfordshire county football as having probably the best pitch, training and social facilities; all backed up by strong financial resources. It is a great shame that those advantages were insufficient to keep them going and they have now been lost to the league along with one of our most well-regarded clubs; a double blow. The club's demise is a powerful endorsement of the message from the chair at the AGM that neither the league nor our member clubs can afford to stand still, resting on our laurels.

We either grow stronger or we fall back. There is no middle way and the league encourages all our teams to be on the look out constantly for new blood, both to boost playing strength and to bring new ideas and energy to your club's management. One man band committees and small squads where everyone is certain to get a game every week are always just one crucial resignation or a couple of no-shows away from collapse.

Community ties are crucial to gaining new volunteers, keeping committee strength up. Nourishing connections with local schools and colleges and encouraging players to bring friends along is essential if playing numbers are not to dwindle away. If your club has a training night make sure it's advertised locally and always make "grown-ups" welcome; they might be a future secretary, chairman or team manager. A cup of tea and a friendly welcome to regulars on a Saturday afternoon can work wonders. As you sow so shall you reap..'
