Friday 30th September - Manchester A Football History: Gary James - writes:

'I'd just like to say thanks for the mention on your website. I noticed a small reference to my book "Manchester A Football History" in a feature on Clydebank* from last year (amazing what internet searches pick up). I'm always delighted when I see something like this, so thanks again.

There are a couple of things that you and your readers may be interested in...

Firstly, I've posted some images of MCFC's old Hyde Road ground on my facebook pages: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150135617717816.285215.289818652815
They are all in my 'research' folder and come from 1905.

Also, I took MCFC's Academy players around some of MCFC's earliest sites the other week. Film appears on both the MCFC website and on my facebook: http://www.facebook.com/GaryJames4 It appears about half way down the list and is called "Academy - past, present and future."

Anyway, I hope this is all of interest. I intend using some of the Hyde Rd images (and some of Maine Rd being demolished) in my next "Big Book Of City" due out at the end of the year. Thanks again, Gary James.

WebEd - Mike Latham refers to Gary's book in his TT following a hop to Clydebank for the Emirates Airlines Scottish Junior Cup Q-F: Clydebank 2-1 Hill of Beath Hawthorn (on 20/03/10) - http://footballgroundsinfocus.com/TT910189.htm

Friday 23rd September - Pen-y-ffordd FC: Mike Latham - writes: 'Pete Olsson from Pen-y-ffordd FC as been in touch:

I thought I would take this opportunity to contact you regarding an upcoming event involving our club Pen-y-ffordd FC. You may know that we enjoyed great success last year gaining promotion to the Welsh National League Premier Division as champions of division 1. As a consequence of our success and due to the fact that we needed to meet Premier Division ground criteria, we were forced to move home from Abbotts Lane in Pen-y-ffordd to The Castle Ground at the Hanson Cement Works in Padeswood. During a very busy close season, we managed to prepare a ground “from scratch” and in July had the ground passed as fit by the Welsh National League Inspection Committee.

We have played a number of home games already; however will be hosting an official opening day on Saturday 22nd October, when our first team host Coedpoeth FC. Festivities will commence at 12:00 when the CEO of Hansen Cement “opens” the ground. We shall be staging a couple of exhibition games in the lead up to the 14:30hrs kick off. The exhibitions will involve our junior teams & a short 5-a-side match for PFC vets against Hanson Cement vets.
We would love to see you and any of your fellow non league enthusiasts at our event.

Our ground location details are as follows: The Castle Ground, Home of Pen-y-ffordd FC, Padeswood Works, Hanson Cement, Padeswood, Mold, Flintshire, CH7 4HB'

Sunday 4th September - Latest Images: Bob Davies - A Biggleswade Double! Bob brings us the very best selection of ground, action and matchday images from his games featuring Dunton (v Shefford & Campton) in the Bedfordshire County League Prem Div and Biggleswade Town (v Haringey & Waltham Development) in the FA Cup Preliminary Round tie both played yesterday...all now added to the new FGIF album gallery...

As Bob adds (in his E-Mail): 'I spent yesterday afternoon at Biggleswade Town, not so much to see the F.A. Cup tie between Town and Haringey and Waltham Development, but see a the debut of a new Bedfordshire County League venue. On the left as you drive into the Carlsberg Stadium there is a roped off pitch with two brick built dugouts. This will be the new home of Dunton FC first team for their Premier Division matches this season. There are seperate changing facilities for the teams in a brick complex between the pitch and 3G pitch next the main stadium. This is seperated from the Town's pitch by a wooden fence.

The game against Shefford Town and Campton, which kicked off at 2.30pm, was a close match with only one goal seperating the sides at half time despite the better chances coming the way of the visitors. In the second half Dunton pulled level from the penalty spot but that only opened the flood gates and the visitors stormed foward quickly retaking the lead and rattling in four more goals, including a penalty of their own. The final score being Dunton 1, Shefford Town and Campton 6.

Right back to that F.A. Cup tie. At half time in the Dunton game the majority of the 30 odd spectators went into the main stadium for some refreshment. The turnstiles had been closed so no admission was charged. The game was 15 minutes in and Biggleswade were 1-0 up and pushing forward. Before we all returned to Dunton second half the Waders went 2-0 but the visitors pulled one back for 2-1. At the end of the Dunton game, again the majority of spectators (including myself) made there way back into the Stadium to watch second half of the Cup game. By that time Biggleswade were 4-1 up and still pressing forward claiming another goal on 66 minutes. 5-1, game over thought the home supporters but how wrong they were to proved. Haringey & W pulled one back within a minute and eroded the home lead further on 73. They certainly had some momentum now and a penalty awarded and put away had brought the scoreline to 5-4. There was now a tense atmosphere around the stadium and in the last minute the visitors managed to stab the ball home from a corner and remarkably had pulled back from 5-1 down to 5-5 and earn themselves a replay.

Amazing stuff to watch and even if they lose the replay they certainly added to magic that the F.A. can sometimes turn out'.

Sunday 4th September - Miles Per Gallon No.50: Andy Gallon - MPG No.50 - Wanting a return for your investment...for his first article of the new season Andy explains how his love of groundhopping began after spending many years watching his own club. Like many other disillusioned fans, he realised that it was time for a change and opted to become a regular neutral football observer instead. He may have many 'good grounds' to back up his argument - just ask fans of say, Grimsby and Arsenal who, after only a couple of games, appear to be venting their frustrations out their own teams already...in reaching a terrific MPG milestone, you'll agree it's yet another MPG cracking read!

WebEd - (to the background sound of a fanfare)... I, along with the many readers of this superb column, would like to express thanks to Andy for his time, effort and dedication in reaching this terrific (fiftieth edition) MPG milestone  ... that's a lot of fantastic MPG articles over the last few years...cheers, Martin
