Despite the recent wet weather, the pitch here, whilst heavy, was perfectly playable and the game was never in doubt at all.

The game paired Coventry Alliance side Whitnash Town and Midland League Division three leaders Alcester Town. I had anticipated a fairly close game, but as so often happens in this excellent competition, the lower league side triumphed fairly easily in the end.

Whitnash is just outside Leamington Spa, and the football team play at the rear of the Whitnash Sports and Social club on Heathcote Road. They share this facility with a bowls club, tennis courts and what looked like a boules rink as well! As is the norm in the Coventry Alliance there are no spectator facilities whatsoever, and the pitch wasn’t even roped off.

Whitnash set about Alcester from the start, not giving them a moment to settle, and harried their way to a 4-0 lead at the break. After the restart, Alcester managed to pull one goal back, but following a plethora of substitutions, Whitnash scored twice more to complete a very comprehensive 6-1 victory.

The crowd was a rather disappointing 21, which included a good few from Alcester and four other groundhoppers. Good to see the social club open up at half time too, with teas/coffees available as well as hot food which were all most welcome on a very cold afternoon.

Another top afternoon out in deepest Warwickshire.
