It was back in 2011 that I made my first trip to Duns to watch the football club make their return to the East of Scotland league after many years away. At the time they were based at the newly built Berwickshire High School on Langtongate in Duns, but a second visit was necessary as they have now crossed over the street and are playing on a pitch at the rear of the old Berwickshire High School building, which I was told was formerly the school hockey pitch.

The new ground is a lot better than the old one, being totally railed off with a small covered area just inside the ground next to the entrance. There is plenty of terracing on the far side and a super tea bar next to the pay box and, in fact, the only thing missing was a programme. Duns have issued regularly since 2011 but unfortunately they decided to stop a week before my visit! Given that they were losing £40 a week every time they issued then it makes perfect sense to stop.

On the pitch Peebles really should have won far more comfortably than they did. They coasted to a 2-0 lead before the break, and then managed to miss 2 penalties which would have given a far better reflection of their superiority had they been scored. Duns then scored a penalty of their own leaving Peebles hanging on somewhat for a deserved win.

Behind one goal is the floodlit ground of Duns Rugby club. Rugby is king in Duns I was told and the fact that the rugby club got grants to enable them to put up floodlights even though they don’t have enough fixtures to ever use them, says it all.
