This match was billed as the biggest game in the very short history of Rhostyllen FC, although as they were only formed in the summer of 2015 that isn’t saying much. That said, they are carrying all before them in the North East Wales league, and have now reached the second round of the Welsh cup as well.

The village is a ten minute bus ride from Wrexham and the club play on the Vicarage Hill recreation ground to the west of the village centre. There is a small stand along one side, but no other spectator facilities to speak off. The teams change in the nearby Rhostyllen Parish Hall building which is some 50 yards along Vicarage Hill, and that is where spectators can park their cars too, although most chose to park on the road just outside the ground. Records show that this ground was first used in 1955, and there have been a succession of clubs playing there over the years, including Rhostyllen Villa who were members of the Wrexham Area league for many years before being thrown out in 1997.

The visitors today were Berriew, once of the Cymru Alliance, but now in the Mid Wales league. The lower ranked Rhostyllen team controlled the match almost from start to finish and when their second goal went in just after half time, I thought they would go on to get a hat full. They didn’t though and, indeed,  Berriew even pulled one back with 15 minutes left, to set up a tense finale. The Villagers held on though to earn a well deserved victory.

My crowd headcount was just 36, although being a public park, people came and went throughout, stopping to watch a few minutes of the game and then moving on.

Splendid entertainment and another excellent day out in North Wales.
