Back to the wonderful Birmingham AFA for my fix this week, and a visit to Nechells for a match between league newcomers Sporting Sandwell and the second team of Real Riverside.

According to the league handbook, Sporting play at Nechells Community Centre, but having driven up and down Rupert Street a couple of times I couldn’t find any such place. I did notice somewhere called Nechells Wellbeing Centre on one of my sweeps though, and this turned out to be the place.

The usual disorganisation of the lower reaches of the AFA prevailed once again of course. KO time of 2.00pm came and went, with the referee finally turning up at 2.25pm and Riverside kicking off with just nine men, and no keeper amongst those nine either. The young lad who was ‘volunteered’ to go in goal was rightly chuffed to have kept a clean sheet by the time the real keeper turned up after twenty minutes, but it all went downhill for Riverside after that.

Sandwell looked a well organised team and they eventually strolled to a 4-0 victory. The final goal came from a penalty which the Real keeper refused to accept and walked off the pitch in disgust. The Referee went to find out what the keeper was playing at, and didn’t like to reply he received so sent the lad off anyway. Enter the stand in keeper once again, but even he couldn’t keep the penalty out, as my photo hopefully shows.

Another top afternoon’s entertainment.
