TT No.85: Ian Hill - Saturday 29th September 2007: FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round: Consett v Workington;   Res: 0 - 2; Attendance: 316; Admission: £5.00; Programme: 44pp, £1.00; FGIF Match Rating: 3*

The second qualifying round of the FA Cup through up an intriguing tie between the two former steel manufacturing towns of Consett and Workington.  Both towns have suffered due to the industries demise although some regeneration money has been pumped into both.

The tie resulted in Conference North Workington being drawn away in the FA Cup for the 14th consecutive tie.  The tie was also set up for a giant killing as Workington have a very poor FA Cup record.

Belle Vue, the home of Consett FC, is located next to the sports centre in the town.  It's a grand old ground but is showing it's age.  There is a very old large main stand along one side of the ground and that's about it.  The stand is fitted out with bucket type sets.  Except for the back row every seat was full of water!  There is the frame of a covered enclosure opposite the stand with the rest of the ground consisting of a grass bowl of banking.

Consent decided to keep their normal matchday prices at £5.00 for the game with a nice programme available for £1.00.

The game was a nervy one with Consett attacking Workington on the break at every opportunity. It was all credit to the Northern League side as they played good football throughout the game.  There were a few scrapes at either end but neither side could break the deadlock before half time. Workington took control of the game in the second half as Consett tired.  The game looked to be heading for a scoreless draw until Workington Centre half Kyle may scored from a corner with 4 minutes to go.  The win was sealed with a fine individual goal from Workington centre forward who beat three Consett players to put the ball in the corner of the net.
