Once upon a time, when I used to travel up to London for football, I never had to bother to check if engineering works taking place on the Underground network would affect my journey, but times are different now, and each of the four different lines I travelled on today had such works ongoing. In fact my wife had to drive me to Ramsgate as the line was 'UP' at Margate before I even set off!

Eventually, after seeking out some superb GBG pubs, and I include the Metropolitan Wetherspoons hostelry, I arrived at Wembley Park station. In front of you is the new arch of the refurbished Wembley stadium, but turn through 180 degrees and you espy South Kilburn FC's unusual ground. Walk around to Forty Avenue and enter through a set of iron gates.

The pitch is surrounded by thousands of tyres, which have been laid out to form a small motocross circuit - this seems to have been unused for some time. No entry fee was taken and a pathetic 4 page programme was gleaned from the home team's changing room. No doubt about it, this was the worst programme I've ever had.
The place is made interesting by having the new Wembley, and that iconic arch, as a backdrop. The clubhouse was closed and nothing to eat or drink was available on the ground. Cross over the road and there are a row of shops where food can be purchased though. The Torch public house is around the corner (not recommended).

South Kilburn were two up by the interval, and a really lacklustre second half was only enlivened when the homesters added two further strikes in the final five minutes. The ex-pats from NW Spain offered little, and perhaps were dreaming of more salubrious climes back in the Motherland.....Lugo, Ferrol, Santiago de Compostela, Ourense, Pontevedra, Vigo and A Coruna all more appealing than Wembley park today.

Just a note of warning if you intend coming to watch South Kilburn. They play some of their games at Sudbury Court, and this game was listed to be played there all week on the League website. Check with Mandy Jennings, the club's helpful secretary, before travelling to establish which ground is being used and when. Best check those engineering works too!
