Another welcome addition to senior football in North Hertfordshire this season is Letchworth Garden City Eagles.

The Pixmore ground has hosted the Eagles junior and youth sides for many years and is situated next to County Ground at Letchworth on the A505. For the entrance and car park take the same exit off the Baldock Road roundabout as the Leisure Centre, then turn right opposite the lay by at the main entrance to the Leisure Centre. This takes you to the Letchworth Rugby Club grounds (in front of you and to the left) and to the entrance to Letchworth Eagles Football Club grounds (to the right). The Eagles car park is behind their grounds - please use the Eagles car park rather than the Leisure Centre's or the Rugby Club's.

The club has, within the last two years, had a new complex built on the site that houses dressing rooms, club room and kitchen. The senior pitch is in front of this and is roped off. The programme and other souvenirs along with refreshments were available from the club room.

I was pleasantly surprised when a programme was available. This issue consisted of a hard glossy 4 pager with match details on the cover and both teams listed inside. The cost of £2 obviously included an admission price but no gate was taken. I believe there were enough travellers visiting to sell out of this particular issue during the game!

The game itself produced a one sided score line with the Eagles dominating the first half to take a 4-0 lead. The young Bedwell Rangers side didnt give up but lacked the clinical finishing shown by the home side. In the second they did however get a couple of goals either side of three more for the Eagles to make the final score 7-2.

Report from the LGCE FC website:

Wednesday 27th August - HCSL Division 1 - After recent disappointments against Hitchin Arena and Kimpton the Eagles really returned to form with a 7-2 thrashing of a young Bedwell Rangers side that never gave up trying but was unable to resist marauding Eagles attacking play. Credit to Bedwell they did put up a sporting performance and never resorted to just a kicking match, but Eagles on the night were top class up front, and could have got more. How Tony Samuels did not get a hat trick I do not know! Eagles were a goal up very early on and by half time went in 4-0 ahead, in front of a crowd of spectators swelled by programme souvenir hunters from as far a field as Manchester. After the break the Eagles took their foot off the gas a bit, cruised to a 7-1 lead and then conceded a late goal to Bedwell after going down to 10 men through injury to Tony Samuels.

Scorers on the night Tony Samuels 2, Adrian Fallano 2, Tony Webb, Larry Connors and Adam Wombwell.
