The FA Cup. For football fans everywhere, there’s nothing really quite like it! We are truly captivated by the romance and magic it brings into our lives from the early rounds when the smaller clubs search for glory, with the once in a lifetime chance of playing a big club and to make giant-killing history right up to the emotionally charged Final at Wembley Stadium. Definitely the stuff dreams are made of! Wick to Wembley chronicles one man’s personal challenge to follow the winning team in each round as the action unfolds. But it’s more than just a journey to different football grounds, it’s a discovery about what this prestigious competition actually means to the clubs; players and fans involved. Based on an idea from his own personal Blog expertly written during the 2007-2008 season, Andy provides us with a fascinating insight into his trials and tribulations as he takes us from his first game at Chertsey (ironically a long throw in from his own back yard) in August right up to the big day when Portsmouth and Cardiff City battle it out for honours in May. Along the way there are many other mini finals to be played as clubs seek to make progress as far as they can. We are taken on the road to Wembley with stops en route at places such as Sittingbourne; Camberley and Bromley in the south to Middlesborough and Barnsley ‘up North'. Each stay is only brief but it's a memorable one. The reader of the book is with Andy every step of the way. You really do feel like his travelling companion whilst sampling those tasty award-winning bacon rolls at Cambridge United and rubbing shoulders with the noisy drum-beating Eastbourne Borough fans. Check out those amazing wigs! You also want to tell his long- suffering wife that it’s Watford and not Dartford who are still playing in the Fourth Round! It’s compelling stuff! Complete with colour photos, the writing is clear, concise, humorous and self-deprecating. It’s not just about turning up at the ground with your ticket. The match action is interspersed with Andy’s feelings as you move through each round. You really do empathise with him! Take the ‘Final Countdown’ and the growing paranoia that has taken over as the Final approaches: having come all this way, will he make it to the Final? Will he even manage to get hold of tickets? Will he survive that nagging cold that has now decided to travel with him? You, the reader, really hope that routine distractions of visiting the dentist, playing golf and going swimming somehow don’t prevent him from reaching his goal. In the words of the author it’s ‘an unforgettable, emotional experience’. For all fans and readers of Football Grounds In Focus you will love this truly remarkable book. You immediately share Andy’s passion, interest, obsession and live the dream. Above all you learn to appreciate that moment of truth when those numbered balls emerge from that famous velvet bag. The draw itself takes on a different meaning as it leads Andy into the unknown. Make that journey with him...you certainly won’t be disappointed…
